朝6時、私は目覚まし時計の音でベッドから這い出し、手早く身支度を整えて家を出た。目的地はオックスフォード。ロンドンからお客さんを連れて向かうために高速道路を使う予定だった。
車に乗り込むと、オーディオブックの続きを再生した。ナビゲーションの音声案内を頼りに運転しながら、淡々とした声で朗読される小説の世界に耳を傾ける。そうやって、私は世間の喧騒から一時的に切り離されることができる。
そんな静かな時間を破るように、スマートフォンが振動した。友人からのメッセージだった。
「変電所の火災でヒースロー空港が閉鎖されているけど、道路は大丈夫？」
ヒースロー空港が閉鎖？ 私は一瞬、何かの冗談かと思った。しかし、そういえば朝のニュースをまったくチェックしていなかった。スマートフォンの画面を指で滑らせ、Googleマップで道路状況を確認する。意外なことに、そこには普段と変わらないスムーズな交通の流れが映し出されていた。
「大丈夫そうだ」私は小さくつぶやくと、再びアクセルを踏んだ。
オックスフォードまでは問題なく到着した。お客さんの友人は日本からのJAL便でヒースローに到着する予定だったが、ニュースによれば、2便のうち1便はフィンランドのヘルシンキへ着陸し、もう1便は途中で羽田に引き返したという。結局、友人は日本に戻ることになったそうだ。
ヒースロー空港は1日20万人が利用する。その影響が身近な人にも及ぶのは、決して不思議なことではない。
帰り道、高速道路は静かだった。今夜の深夜0時まで空港は閉鎖されたままだ。タクシーの数も少なく、いつもは混雑する道が驚くほど空いていた。まるで、世界の一部が一時的に止まってしまったかのような感覚に陥る。
そんな風に、ロンドンの夜は静かに更けていく。

From London to Oxford: A Substation Fire and an Unusually Quiet Motorway
At 6 a.m., I dragged myself out of bed to the sound of my alarm, quickly got ready, and left the house. My destination was Oxford, and I was taking a client there from London via the motorway.
Once I got into the car, I resumed my audiobook. With the GPS guiding me, I let myself sink into the narrator’s calm, monotonous voice. It was a way to temporarily detach myself from the noise of the world.
Then, breaking that quiet moment, my phone vibrated. A message from a friend.
"A substation fire has shut down Heathrow Airport. Are the roads okay?"
Heathrow, closed? For a moment, I thought it was a joke. But then I realized I hadn’t checked the news at all that morning. Sliding my fingers over my phone screen, I opened Google Maps to check the traffic. Surprisingly, everything looked normal—no major congestion in sight.
"Seems fine," I muttered to myself and pressed the accelerator.
The drive to Oxford went smoothly. My client's friend was supposed to arrive at Heathrow on a JAL flight today. But according to the news, one of the two JAL flights had been diverted to Helsinki, Finland, while the other had turned back to Haneda. In the end, my client’s friend had to return to Japan.
With 200,000 passengers passing through Heathrow every day, it wasn’t surprising that someone I knew had been affected.
On the way back to London, the motorway was eerily quiet. With Heathrow set to remain closed until midnight, taxis were scarce, and the usual traffic had vanished. It felt as if a part of the world had temporarily come to a halt.
And just like that, the night in London quietly carried on.
