最近、よく聞かれる質問だ。「イギリスは住みやすいですか？」と。私が20年以上もイギリスに暮らしていると知ると、多くの人が興味を持ち、そう尋ねてくる。
私はいつもこう答える。「地震も台風もなく、ゴキブリや蚊もいない。医療と高速道路は無料で、高校卒業まで教育費もかからない。人間関係も適度な距離感があって、他人に干渉されることなく自由に生きられる。だから、とても住みやすい国だ」と。
「ただし……」
と、一拍置いて付け加える。「11月から2月ごろまでの日照時間は極端に短く、まるで暗黒の世界にいるような気分になる。その長く続く曇天に心を病まずにいられるか。それが、イギリスで生き残れるかどうかの分かれ道だ」と。
イギリス人は、この時期の過ごし方を小さい頃から知っている。だから、冬のどんよりとした空を見ても特に違和感を持たない。彼らにとっては当たり前の景色だ。しかし、海外から来た人間にとってはどうだろう？
例えば、日本なら冬でもカラッと晴れる日があるし、雪山へ行けば青空の下でウィンタースポーツを楽しむこともできる。しかし、イギリスにはほとんど山がないため、スキーをする文化もない。ただひたすら、灰色の空と冷たい雨が続く。そんな4カ月間を乗り切れるかどうか。それがイギリス生活の最大の試練となる。
日本では地震や台風に備えなければならないが、イギリスではその心配はない。けれど、長く暗い冬を耐え抜く精神力が必要だ。それでも「住みやすい」と言えるかどうか。それは、その人がどれだけこの国の冬を受け入れられるかにかかっているのだろう。

Is the UK a Comfortable Place to Live?
This is a question I get asked quite often. "Is the UK a comfortable place to live?" Many people become curious when they hear that I have been living in the UK for over 20 years.
I always answer, "There are no earthquakes or typhoons, no cockroaches or mosquitoes. Healthcare and highways are free, and education is also free up to high school graduation. People don’t interfere too much in your life, allowing you to live freely. So yes, it is a very comfortable place to live."
"But..."
I pause for a moment and then add, "From November to around February, the daylight hours are extremely short, making it feel like living in a world of perpetual darkness. The key to surviving in the UK is whether you can endure this long, gloomy period without falling into depression."
The British have grown up experiencing this kind of winter, so they don’t find the dark and dreary weather unusual. It’s simply a part of life for them. But for those coming from abroad, it’s a different story.
For example, in Japan, even during winter, there are days with clear skies. If you go to the mountains, you can enjoy winter sports under bright sunshine. But the UK has almost no mountains, so skiing culture doesn’t really exist. Instead, all you get is weeks of gray skies and cold rain. The challenge is whether you can endure this dark, four-month stretch.
Compared to Japan, where people must always be prepared for natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons, the UK feels much safer. However, surviving the long, dark winter requires mental resilience. Whether or not the UK is truly a comfortable place to live depends entirely on whether you can embrace its winter.
