2025年、ダウントン・アビーの誕生から15年が経とうとしている。改めてこのドラマに描かれたイギリス貴族の生活を振り返ると、まるで異世界の物語のように思えてくる。豪奢な屋敷に住み、身の回りの世話を執事やメイドたちに任せ、優雅なティータイムを楽しむ公爵たち。その一方で、屋敷を支える使用人たちは、細やかな序列とルールのもとで、日々の営みをこなしていく。この対比がドラマをより深く、そして魅力的なものにしているのだろう。
そんなダウントン・アビーの舞台となったのは、イギリスのコッツウォルズ地方に点在する小さな村々だ。とりわけ有名なのが、イングランド南部ハンプシャー州ニューベリー近郊のハイクレア城。そしてもうひとつ、イングランド南部オックスフォードシャー州にあるバンプトン村。この村のセント・メアリー教会や診療所として登場した図書館は、ファンにとっては見逃せないスポットだ。これらの地を訪れると、まるでダウントン・アビーの世界に迷い込んだかのような錯覚を覚える。

かつては農地や鉱業で富を築いた貴族たちも、現代では投資ファンドや企業経営、不動産開発などに進出している。時代とともにその形は変われど、「働かずに豊かに暮らす」という貴族の哲学は、今なお息づいているのだ。
イギリスでは、このような貴族のライフスタイルこそが「成功」の象徴とされている。人々は、可能であれば仕事をせずに生きることを夢見ている。そして、貴族のように優雅な暮らしを手に入れることが、一つのステータスとして憧れの対象になるのだ。これは日本とは異なる価値観だろう。
ダウントン・アビーの世界は、単なるフィクションではない。それは、かつて確かに存在し、そして今も形を変えながら続いているイギリスの貴族社会の一端なのである。

As 2025 marks the 15th anniversary of Downton Abbey, one cannot help but be astonished once again by the aristocratic lifestyle depicted in the series. The grandeur of noble estates, where dukes and earls live in luxury, attended to by devoted servants, is almost like a story from another world. While the nobility indulges in lavish tea times and elegant soirées, the servants meticulously maintain the household under a strict hierarchy and unspoken rules. This stark contrast is what makes the drama so compelling and deeply intriguing.
The filming locations for Downton Abbey are scattered across the Cotswolds, one of England’s most picturesque regions. Among the most famous sites is Highclere Castle, located near Newbury in Hampshire. Another key location is Bampton, a small village in Oxfordshire, where Downton Village was brought to life. The St. Mary’s Church and the library (which served as the village hospital in the show) are must-see spots for fans. Visiting these places feels like stepping into the world of Downton Abbey, offering a fleeting taste of noble life.

Some owned land in cities like London, earning rental income, while others profited from coal and mineral extraction or investments in railway enterprises. Certain noble families even received pensions and grants from the monarchy.
Today, modern dukes and earls no longer rely solely on land revenue. Many have ventured into investment funds, corporate management, and real estate development to sustain their wealth. While the traditional estates still provide a foundation, contemporary nobility is actively engaged in maintaining their financial status through modern economic strategies.
In the UK, the idea of "not working and still living in comfort" is seen as the ultimate status symbol. Many aspire, if not to nobility itself, then at least to a lifestyle as close to it as possible. Unlike in Japan, where diligence and hard work are highly valued, British culture often associates success with financial independence and a life of leisure.
Downton Abbey is not just a fictional drama—it is a window into a world that once existed and, in many ways, still does. The noble ideals of wealth, status, and effortless luxury continue to shape the aspirations of many, proving that the allure of aristocracy is far from fading.
